Located just off the coast of Rhode Island, Block Island is a picturesque gem that is woven into our DNA and our favorite place on earth! Block Island is a remote destination accessible by ferry and small planes (please note, there are no commercial flights directly to the island). To ensure a smooth travel experience, we recommend booking your ferry or small plane tickets promptly after securing your accommodations. Please see below for travel details:
Traveling from NJ/NY:
For those coming from New Jersey or New York, the closest passenger ferry departs from New London, CT (Address: 2 Ferry St, New London, CT 06320 Phone: (860) 444-4624) . You can get to the ferry terminal by car (and park there) OR by Amtrak/train. This ferry is about an hour long to Block Island, and is passenger only, no cars on the ferry (you do not need a car on Block Island). Secure your passenger ferry reservation at GoBlockIsland.
Another ferry option (the one we usually take) is the Point Judith Ferry! Located at 304 Great Island Rd, Narragansett, RI 02882, Point Judith is a 3 hour drive from Manhattan, ~38 minute drive from either PVD Airport (New Providence, RI) or the Westerly, RI train station. This terminal has both a slow ferry (one hour to BI) and a fast ferry (30 minutes to BI). As a passenger you can take either the slow ferry or the fast ferry! Secure your ferry passenger reservation here, or you can pick them up in-person at the window (given that this is a holiday weekend, we suggest purchasing the tickets in advance!).
You are able to take your car on the slow ferry option out of Point Judith, however please note the car reservations fill quickly, so if you intend to bring a car, book your spot ASAP. There is plenty of affordable parking nearby the ferry terminal, and it is absolutely not necessary to bring a car to the island as it is quite small and there a number of taxi services available, in addition to bikes and mopeds. You can also rent a car ON the island. Make car reservations to bring your car onto the Slow Ferry by calling 1-866-783-7996 EXT 3.
There are also quick and affordable direct flights from NYC/Newark to PVD (New Providence, RI) if you'd prefer to fly rather than drive or train. From PVD airport, you can then Uber/Taxi or rent a car to reach the Point Judith Ferry, 30 - 40 minutes away.
Traveling from Out of State:
For out-of-state guests, flying into Providence, RI (PVD) is the most convenient option. You can then take an Uber/Taxi or rent a car to the Point Judith Ferry Terminal (304 Great Island Rd, Narragansett, RI 02882; see above for ticketing details), which is about 40 minutes away. Again there is affordable parking nearby the ferry terminal and there is absolutely no need for a car on the island.
The other option is flying into Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), this is a 1 hour and 30 Minute drive to Point Judith Ferry Terminal .You can then take an Uber/Taxi or rent a car to the Point Judith Ferry Terminal (304 Great Island Rd, Narragansett, RI 02882; see above for ticketing details), If you choose this option, please let us know so we can try to coordinate shared rides for you with other guests that might be flying into BOS.
Small Planes from Westerly, RI:
You can take a small plane directly to Block Island! You can take the train from NYC to Westerly, RI or Uber/Taxi to Westerly Airport from a nearby larger airport (45 min drive from PVD). While there are small planes flying from Westerly, RI, to Block Island, they operate only in clear conditions. For a more reliable option, we recommend the ferry. If you prefer flying, reservations can be made at Block Islands Airline.
Block Island is only 12 Miles in perimeter! It's walkable and bike-able with plenty of taxis - you do not need a car! All ferries will drop you off in the center of town, which has the majority of restaurants, shopping, moped/bike/car rentals and is walking distance to most of the hotels and Bed & Breakfasts. The parking lot that you'll dock on the ferry is shared with a taxi stand (across from the Old Harbor View restaurant) that can take you anywhere on the island, and is shared with the Chamber of Commerce building (great for maps/questions).
Again, it is totally up to you if you'd like to have your car for the weekend, however it is not necessary given the number of Taxis and other means of transportation available. There are a number of Taxi companies on the island that all work together, so giving one of the numbers listed here should get you an available taxi fairly quickly!
